To gather a list of the hottest 2020 home décor trends, we consulted our favorite design pros, studied the latest Houzz data and research, and listened to what our clients are asking for in their homes. We’ve compiled a list of the Top 5 home design trends that have been exciting homeowners this year.
1. Indoor-Outdoor Living Spaces: Indoor-Outdoor living spaces have been dominating the home décor space this year. Rooms featuring massive windows allow tons of natural light to fill your home. The focus on indoor-outdoor living gives the home a fresh open-air feel and creates a seamless transition between the living room and the back patio. Homes with these spaces are optimal for entertaining and hosting – especially large crowds that might not fit in your living room otherwise! You can see below, both of these homes feature beautiful indoor-outdoor living spaces with a wall of windows that open up, allowing the living room to smoothly collide with the back patio.
2. Geometric Backsplashes: When choosing your kitchen backsplash design, there are tons of options, from traditional subway tile to stacked stones to abstract tiles. This year geometric backsplashes are taking center stage! You can see from the kitchen below, these geometric patterned backsplashes introduce a unique tone into a kitchen adding an extra layer to the aesthetic.
3. Wood Accents: In the world of home design, wood has always been a traditional home design choice and it is here to stay in 2020. Wood is a great material to use to add warmth to a room or give it a rustic touch. When it comes to the kitchen, if you’re looking to make a statement try using butcher block for your island. According to Mitchell Parker (Houzz editorial staff), “recent Houzz research reveals that among wanting a contrasting island material, 41% choose butcher block or a wood slab, followed by a distant 28% who selected quartz.”
4. Colored Cabinets: For years the all-white cabinet trend has been dominating all the popular Pinterest boards but that trend seems to be falling out of favor this year with top interior designers and homeowners. Instead we are seeing earth tones and pops of darker color being reintroduced into the kitchen and bathrooms. The trend in 2020 is to choose one or several elements, like the kitchen island, in an earth tone or more daring color like navy blue or dark green. Natural finishes like wood colors and neutral paints are gaining popularity as well.
5. Open Shelving: Open shelving first became popular in the kitchen but the trend is now expanding throughout the home including bathrooms, bedrooms, living rooms, and more! This type of shelving creates an easy space to showcase some favorite décor pieces while making it convenient to access everyday items, making this trend both stylish and functional. Open shelving has gained popularity as it helps make a room feel more open compared to standard enclosed kitchen cabinets.
